This is an intriguing debut novel which takes as its theme the ease with which a seemingly idyllic existence can be swiftly torn apart. The Darrowdale Community was designed to be the perfect, stress-free home - a quiet haven where couples like Laura and Terry Richardson could raise their two children, Caitlin and Daniel, in safety. The family's life is perfect, until one summer's day Laura Richardson goes missing, never to be seen again. Her daughter Caitlin reacts to the disappearance of her mother very badly, and the grim times that follow have a traumatic effect on her. She becomes estranged from her remaining family, and elects to construct for herself a new and very private life, where her past is a secret to those about her. 20 years have passed since her mother's disappearance, and Caitlin has settled into her new life, when her organized world is threatened. She receives a shocking typewritten note. And with deep disquiet she realizes that the writer of the note, while appearing to offer a solution to the mystery of her past, actually has a far darker agenda. Susan Hepburn's prose is pared-down and unpretentious, delivering a taut and swiftly moving tale with maximum economy. Caitlin is a well-rounded protagonist with whom it's easy to identify, and this is a striking debut in the psychological thriller genre. (Kirkus UK)
