Product Description

Publishers Weekly, USA

"... compares favorably with the work of the popular author of tartan noir, Ian Rankin ... McDowall expertly manages a complicated plot and has created realistic, albeit troubled characters ... a compelling, fast-moving story that leaves the reader wondering where he will go from here"

The Northern Echo, UK

"Smart cop, tough cop combinations seem to be all the rage just now and DS Ian Kerr and DCI Frank Jacobson of Crowby CID are no exception. McDowall has come up with a pair who could hold their own with Dalziell and Pascoe"

5.0 out of 5 stars great new author, 15 Nov 2000
By A Customer
I read this in hardback and loved it. A wonderfully atmospheric mystery. McDowall brings two new detectives onto the police procedural scene. DCI Jacobson and DS Kerr. I love them already. If you can imagine an earthier, less austere Morse and a darker, brooding (even sexy my wife says) Sgt Lewis you get some idea of what McDowall is doing. The action moves easily and credibly between the English Midlands and Amsterdam. Add on realistic characters with psychological depths. Add on black humour and some killer one liners. Most of all add on a whodunnit plot that will keep you guessing right to the end. Can't wait to read the next in the series

5.0 out of 5 stars Morse is dead...long live Inspector Jacobson, 14 Jan 2001
By A Customer
This one had me hooked from the first sentence. Dark atmosphere, black humour and great writing. A bit like reading Inspector Morse written by Ian Rankin. Or maybe that should be a Rebus written by Colin Dexter. Either way a cracking debut. The Midlands locations are so realistic it had me wondering exactly where Crowby is ...a real town under an assumed name maybe? I think we should be told.

5.0 out of 5 stars an intelligent stylish mystery, 3 April 2001
By A Customer
A friend put me on to this one and i'm glad he did. I ended up having to read it in one sitting. This is the most original crime story i've read in a long while. The characters were realistic and believable and the writer's style was more subtle and intelligent than the typical crime novel. Great! Put me down for the next one.
