'Dark Undertakings' arose directly from my own experience of working at an undertaker's in Sussex, England. During my seven years there, I saw many instances of potential foul play, where the regulations, although strictly adhered to, were no guarantee at all that the death was natural. The novel is therefore a 'What if...' exercise. Suppose a body was found in his own bed, with no signs of violence...an obvious case of heart failure.
