Review

'BAIT is an intriguing debut, brimming with action, memorable characters, and a fascinating Kenyan setting. Jouma and Jake are a pair to watch' --Jeff Abbott

BAIT is a fresh debut by a writer of exceptional promise who brings a confident and vibrant slant to the crime genre...I have no fear that this is the start of a powerful new series from a new and vibrant voice --SHOTS Magazine

Product Description

Ex-Flying Squad cop Jake Moore?s career was cut short by a bullet; ten years on, he runs a game fishing business that is about to go to the wall. But old habits die hard, and when cerebral Mombasa detective Daniel Jouma - seemingly the only good policeman in a city where corruption is king - asks for his help in solving a baffling murder case, he cannot help but become involved. The mangled body of a street criminal has been washed up on the beach and a fishing boat skipper and his bait boy have blown up in the water. When Jake and Jouma look closer, they discover that not only are the murders linked, but the conspiracy surrounding them stretches far beyond the reaches of Africa - and has deadly implications for everyone concerned. This gripping crime thriller strips away Kenya?s tourist glitz and exposes the country?s dark and treacherous underbelly beneath.

After reading Nick Brownlees debut novel Bait I would like to comment on what an enjoyable, page turning read I found it. He portrays his characters brilliantly and keeps the reader utterly engrossed until the very last page. Looking forward to the sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC, NEW, AND VERY READABLE, 5 Dec 2008
By J. R. Daniell "Avid Reader" (London) - See all my reviews

This is a exciting new series set in Kenya, featuring Jake, an American policeman, an, Jouma a policeman in Kenya.
There is plenty of action and mystery, and the different characters work well and are very likeable. Jouma is one of the few policeman that will take a bribe, while Jake is a down on his luck boat operator. The main suspect is shrouded through the book and it is hard to guess who it is as the author keeps changing your mind.
Really enjoyed this and am now looking forward to more in this series, and interested to see how the character develop. Recommended this as a great read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hooked
There's no point in telling you to read this début novel - because when you've scanned the first paragraph, you won't be able to stop.
