Fans of health and nutrition authority Patrick Holford, founder of the Institute of Optimum Nutrition, will probably buy anything that carries his name--and no healthy home should be without his classic
The Optimum Nutrition Bible.
Whether you are looking to lose weight, get healthy or get out of a rut, this eminently readable, well-designed, informative and authoritative guide is guaranteed to have a permanent effect on your lifestyle.
A positive and inspiring introduction includes a detailed quiz covering every aspect of your health. This is followed by the six-week plan which focuses on energy levels, digestion, hormones, detoxing, boosting the immune system and finally memory and moods. The unisex approach ensures that this appeals equally to both sexes, with specific sections for men and women where applicable (e.g. for hormones). Holford deftly repeats key messages, while health processes (like the digestive system) are helpfully illustrated with childlike diagrams.
A final section with easy yet tempting recipes, detailed advice on supplements, plus resources also includes details of courses on the recommended exercise system psychocalisthenics. The fact that it's a 16-minute routine is incentive enough to learn, though this is a little difficult from the book's diagrams alone. --Lorna V.

Holford is the founder of the Institute for Optimum Nutrition and author of many health and nutrition books including The Optimum Nutrition Bible. Here he makes a bold offer of 'total health transformation', pointing out that feeling just 'all right' is not all right at all. Rather, the goal should be superhealth - boundless energy, positive outlook, rarely ill, contented and with a toned body. He distinguishes superhealth from what he calls 'vertically ill' as well as what most of us regard as obviously not well, 'horizontally ill' (exhausted, depressed, pessimistic, incapacitated and despairing). The vertically ill are those prone to all the ailments associated with typical Western high-pressure lifestyles: constant tiredness, mood swings, low concentration, feeling run down, drained, overwhelmed and dissatisfied. Once you've decided, with the help of introductory questionnaires and explanations, that this is probably where you stand (or flop), he has a hand-holding, week-by-week strategy for getting all aspects of your life back in balance, covering nutrition, fitness, attitudes and environment. En route are techniques to boost your energy, tune up your digestion, balance your hormones, detox your body, boost your immune system and improve memory and mood. As you would expect, there is extensive nutritional advice, and he also teaches a special set of exercises, called psychocalisthenics, and offers advice on quitting smoking, avoiding sugar cravings, managing the menopause, taking the most appropriate supplements and beating a cold.
