Essential reading for anyone thinking of starting a family, 8 Aug 2001

I bought this book after seeing it discussed on a fertility site message board. I have to say that sometimes reading it made me quite angry - not with the book, but with our medical system which does not give us this vital (also relatively cheap and simple) advice! The fact that taking certain vitamin supplements and having a healthy diet can dramatically affect your future child's health (as well as your chances of firstly getting pregnant and then having a viable pregnancy) should be made much more common knowledge. Why doesn't the NHS invest a bit of money in promoting this kind of information and potentially save itself huge amounts on fertility investigations and treatments? The most amazing statistic is that of 325 couples who got pregnant using this advice, not a single one had a miscarriage or birth defects - the national average is that 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage! Now that has to be worth a bit of effort. (The diet is also extremely good for your own health and future health, of course - cutting down your chances of a large number of diseases). It is early days for us, so it will be some time before we know whether it has been successful, but even if it doesn't work, by reading the book my husband has finally been persuaded to 'do his bit' and alter his eating habits, too - so it's no longer all down to me. Even if you are not aware of any fertility problems, read this book (or a similar one) before you try to concieve - it could save you an awful lot of heartache! (But read Toni Weschler, too - that contains a lot more info every woman should know about her body!)
