Amazon.co.uk Review

The claims of this book are high: the Detox programme will increase your energy levels, boost your immune system, lose weight and even banish cellulite--and all in 30 days?

Scrivner, a member of the British School of Complementary Therapy, devised the Detox programme after years of treating harassed and "burn out" clients. The programme (not a diet) is a means to spring-clean the body, ridding it of the built-up excess wastes and toxins accumulated from our modern-day lives of stress, pollutants, processed foods and physical inactivity.

So what's involved? At first, it does at first seem a rather severe regime. There is a strict list of foods not to be strayed from, there is a cold shower every morning, daily exercise to be taken, plus combinations of other activities such as tonics, dry skin rubs, massages and breathing exercises to fit in. As the author says: "it is a total body experience, holistic in approach, that works on every part of the body--internally and externally".

The skill of this book is that it does actually convince you to try the programme--if not completely strictly, then at least at some personably attainable level. There is an excellently digestible overview of the programme, discussing why we need to Detox and what it means to be "toxed" in the first place. The tone is upbeat and encouraging and its assurance that results will be felt in a matter of days is both inspiring and believable. -- Abi Frisby

5.0 out of 5 stars A feel good review, 27 Nov 2009
By G. Kay "silversurfer" (Kifissia, Greece) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Detox Yourself (Paperback)
If you want to feel good this is a book to buy and keep by your side. Admittedly you need a little time to yourself to read it and put the very practical and valid suggestions into action. However once on track I didn't look back. Simple tips like cutting out caffeine, wheat and dairy products and introducing lots of fruit, vegetables, pulses and a daily quota of brown rice meant I was never hungry. Wonderful suggestions such as dry body brushing, self massage and hot/cold shower all helped obtain a feeling of well-being. An added plus, at the end of the month I lost 3 kilos without even trying, although I did introduce extra walking and yoga into my regime. Do try, it is well worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars this really works, 28 Jan 2002
By A Customer
Yes, the book demands alot of organisation from the reader in terms of food preparation. Yes, you do have to give up some of your favourite foods. Yes, you do get headaches & spots in the first week. Yes, you really do have to brush your skin every morning with a bristle brush. Yes, one must try to do at least 30 minutes exercise every day. Does it work? A BIG YES.
I have always been sceptical of diets. Everyone knows that as soon as you finish your cabbage soup diet and start eating normally again the pounds come back with avengance and yet again you are trapped in that fruitless search for the next miracle cure for the excess pounds.
This book intrigued me because it's basic principle was to try and eat a healthy balance of good food throughout the day, including olive oil and other good fats, and to compliment the eating programme with some moderate exercise & a few positive thinking theories.
I admit I only did the de-tox eating plan, the exercise, the dry skin brushing, exfoliation, massage and the supplements. (Did I say'only'?) The other stuff scared me a bit.I even cheated at times with the odd cup of tea and chocolate bar but on the whole stuck to the plan. The most amazing thing started happening to my body in the third week. I could feel that my whole body shape was changing. I was firming up, the fat was literally disappearing and I felt fantastic. In the fourth week people began to comment on how well I looked and the "Have you lost weight?" question was on everyone's lips. I had always had problems with feeling sleepy at inappropiate moments and would be constantly wishing that I could go & take a nap somewhere. This programme totally resolved my dormouse tendancies and I found myself staying up later & getting up earlier full of infuriating energy and raring to go.
I did the de-tox thing for a month. When the month was over I celebrated at a restaurant with some friends and ordered a big, sticky, sweet and calorie ridden pudding and yup, it tasted delicious. Something frightening happened on the way home. I had to stop my car on the side of the motorway because I couldn't keep my eyes open. For the first time in a few weeks that terrible sleepiness had returned. I was convinced that I was a diabetic but subsequent tests have shown me that I'm definitely not. I obviously react badly to sugar and doing this eating plan will show you whether you have any allergies or food intolerances. Once you introduce certain foods back into your diet it's interesting to see how your body reacts.
I have now incorporated the plan into my everyday life and I would highly recommend that you give this a bash. I lost 14lbs in one month and am currently losing more weight at a slower and safer rate. There are some things I would question. Are lemons really less acidic than oranges? Is it really essential to have a cold shower every morning? On the whole, this book is great and the advice is well presented and easy to follow. Just try it. It certainly changed my life.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not for drink and drug withdrawals, 1 Dec 2007
By Joscatuna (London) - See all my reviews
This book is misleadingly listed by Amazon under 'drugs' and 'addictions'. Do not be misled. If you are seeking a 'detox', in the sense of withdrawal from drugs or alcohol, this book is completely useless. It could even be dangerous. The book may be of some interest to women who are worried about 'cellulite'.
