5.0 out of 5 stars Nothing is ever what it seems, 12 May 2009
By L. Bezzina (Malta) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As a fan of HC s most recent and popular novels ( Tell No One being the most memorable )i decided to put my hand in my wallet or credit card as is the point here and buy his first ever book written many years ago, that is currently out of print and therefore not so easy to find. And very expensive as it is such a hard find. But boy wasnt the book worth every cent i spent on it.
Ok, the book is pure fiction at its best in the sense that the plot borders on the unbelievable. But hey, we know it is fiction and that is why fiction is so beautiful cause it leaves the mundane reality shut off for a while. Without giving anything from the plot away, the story is about a young, wealthy, popular couple that have everything going for them. And they are very much in love. But while on the perfect honeymoon in Australia, the paradise turns to hell all of a sudden.... just with one ring of the phone.
A real page turner in the classic sense. I doubt if there is a single page in this book where something important does not happen. So much so that once you begin it you will want to finish it in the least time possible, as with each page you turn the mystery continues to thicken. There is excellent dialogue all throughout the book, written in a simple and very pleasant way and the characters are wonderfully described. A hell of a jigsaw puzzle to solve, so do yourself a favour and dont try to play detective on this one. Just read it without skipping a single sentence, it is that good. Seeing that this was HC s debut novel, it s no wonder he s become one of the most current rated authors.

4.0 out of 5 stars Coben's Books are Almost Always a Good Read, 22 Aug 2007

This review is from: Play Dead (Hardcover)

Harlan Coben continues to prove that he is one of the best thriller writers around at the moment. A page turner is a much used phrase but in this case it is really appropriate. The author's books are always so well structured and his character's well rounded. He is obviously comfortable with his writing style and this transmits itself to the reader making the reading of his books sheer pleasure from start to finish. Coben has now got a string of best selling crime novels behind him and all I can say is that I hope he continues to write for many years to come. The author lives in New Jersey with his wife and four children.

Harlan Coben's books often border on the edge of implausibility and this one is no exception but it does not detract from the entertainment value for the reader. The story is about a basketball star who fakes his own death while honeymooning in the tropics. His bereaved bride is not convinced that his death is an accident and begins snooping around, which proves to be extremely dangerous when the people who may be able to help her with some answers start being systematically bumped off . . .
