""Totally convincing...Gripping to the last."

Product Description

Solomon is full of anger - with the teachers and his father, who mother who has left him and with himself. He cannot bear to be at home or at school. His refuge is one corner of the kirkyar, where nothing lives but a rowan tree. When workmen cut this tree down, a terrible force comes to life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Whispers in the Graveyard by Theresa Breslin James 10 Dorset, 13 Aug 2003
By A Customer
I have just read Whispers in the Graveyard by Theresa Breslin.
The story was about a boy called Soloman who has learning disabilities he does not realise until later in the story that his dad cannot read or write either , his dad has a drinking problem so his mother has left them. When Soloman gets upset at school beacause he is teased and bullied by a teacher he goes to the local graveyard . He finds it is going to be moved and replaced by a bridge, when the workmen uproot the Rowan tree an evil force is let loose and a witch that was buried there comes to life. Soloman has a new teacher who tries to help him at school when she finds out his problems which he has kept secret. He makes friends with a girl called Amy who has moved to the area as her Dad is in charge of the work at the graveyard. The best and scariest part is when the witch tries to kill Amy and Soloman saves her. His Dad helps him in the end. It is a really great and gripping story and I like the description of the graves coming up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary atmosphere, 14 Jun 2001
By A Customer
This novel was brilliantly atmospheric and descriptive which really made the reader feel the fear and apprehension that Solomon (the main character) felt. On one level this story can be enjoyed as an eerie tale into which the author integrates authentic Scottish legends and historical fact. It is also, however, the story of a child coming to terms with himself and who he is through his misunderstood learning difficulty, dyslexia, and the discovery of his father's alcoholism. The conclusion of this story also fits in very well with the overall plot . . . but you'll have to read it to find out! A fantastic book which I would recommend to anyone who enjoys this genre.

1.0 out of 5 stars "horific!", 26 Jan 2006
Whispers in the graveyard, by Teresa breslin is terrible and rubbish, if you have a 6 year old who won't go to sleep read him this!

It’s a story set in Scotland about a boy called Solomon, who suffers with undiagnosed dyslexia and a drunken dad who constantly attacks him. It is annoying to read the book with such a dull plot as it's boring and unrealistic! (I actually fell asleep at one point) it’s confusing, troubling and mind blowing the whole way through. one bit i did pick up was about his teacher- mr Watkins who picks on Solomon not knowing he is dyslexic, this made me feel bad as my best friend is dyslexic.

This genre is my favourite, which is a supernatual, sci fi, complex story with an issue,(in this case dyslexia) but this has just put me right off! This my favourite plot as well as it has a supernatural side to it.

Personally I’d rather read a teletubie picture book in front of everyone i know than read it again!!

This is the worst book I’ve ever read!
