4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and haunting, 14 Jan 2006

This review is from: Soundtrack (Paperback)
"Soundtrack" should be more widely known than it is. Julie Bertagna's description of Finn's world is so perfect that you feel like you are actually there. In common with the protagonists of Bertagna's other novels, Finn is isolated from his family; in his case, by his age and his secret desire to leave the small fishing town where he grew up. The trouble is that Finn isn't exactly fond of school. More often than not, he ends up on the beach or in his secret cave, looking for treasures the sea might have brought him. But trouble is brewing: the Ministry of Defence's submarines are disturbing the fishing, while the community of New Age travellers is none too happy about the MOD testing; and Finn's dad has a major contract with the MOD.

The writing in this book is beautiful and haunting. Finn's connection to his world and the sea in particular is brilliantly displayed throughout the book. The ending is bittersweet and leaves you wanting to know more.

Those who like this book might also like "Secret Songs" by Jane Stemp.
