Review
A clever variant on the time-honored advice "Don't put beans up your noses!" Tom's Dad tells him not to stick his head between the bars of an iron railing, demonstrates what he means - and gets stuck himself. Passers-by in ascending numbers, one to ten, try to get him out: a lady with butter, two men who try to bend the rails, four joggers who lift him to find a better angle, nine policemen who take notes - but it takes ten firemen (and their jack) to get him out. Whereupon Tom sticks his head through the bars to show the firemen how it all happened. . . The deftly drawn, colorful illustrations of the growing crowd of helpers and onlookers add to the humor of this satisfying, cautionary counting-book. (Kirkus Reviews)
