Product Description

Product Description
Charley is the drummer boy of the 44th Foot, East Essex Regiment and for the first time feels he is wanted as he makes friends in the regiment. For Charley, it is the adventure of a lifetime, as long as no one discovers his secret.

From the Author
A twist in the tail
Drummer Boy is set in the Crimean War in 1854. In those days boys of 10 went to war like adults. They were terrible wars too, with horrible injuries from cannon balls and musket balls. Charley leaves his home village at ten years of age to find himself amongst the havoc of battle and when, in the end, something unspeakable happens, he reveals the secret he has hidden from his superior officers the whole time he has been in the army.

2.0 out of 5 stars Aiming at the wrong age band, 15 Jun 2000
By A Customer
The Drummer Boy is a children's book that follows the adventures of a ten year old called Charley that goes to the Crimean War. The problem with the book is that it is written in language for children aged between 7 and 11, whilst covering a topic that cannot really be written about without a reasonable amount of description. The English really is very basic with placenames such as Sebastopol at odds with the rest of the text. The author has attempted to write for children the same age as the main character in an attempt to emphasise and shock the young reader into realising that, but for modern times, they could also have been witness to such scenes. It does not quite work. It has the feel of an adult book being dumbed down to child level. If we did have the adult version, a much grittier, graphic and complete novel could have been had.

5.0 out of 5 stars Writing for kids, 2 Jul 2000
By A Customer
The person from Manchester sounds like someone older. I thought Drummer Boy was really great because it told me the story in an exciting way. I liked it because there was action all the way through. Too many grown ups think they know what kids want and try to tell us we shold be reading stuff with lots of description. They should think back to when they were kids.
