5.0 out of 5 stars Childrens Fantasy At Its Best, 18 May 2001
By A Customer
I first read this book as a child and it gave me an interest and love of fantasy which still endures. Enid Blyton's writing is at its dream-like best and she weaves a world which defies continent and science and all other adult theories. Put quite simply a very great book which shouldn't be overlooked by any age of reader, however be warned you must read and forget all your preconceptions of the world. The ultimate book for pure dreaming.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for my 6 year old daughter, 22 Nov 2005
My daughter insisted on reading this book in bed every night for a couple of weeks until she had finished it. She loved it, and it gave her a great confidence in her reading ability and showed her that reading can be a real joy not a chore.

It is written in a style that is just right for her now: relatively simple words and sentences, but put together in a way that paints a vivid fantasy picture.

The characterisation is simple in the extreme, and some might find fault with the book for that. I don't because books with better characterisation (e.g. The BFG) are more advanced than my daughter can cope with at the moment. One step at a time, and on that basis this book gets full marks from me.

5.0 out of 5 stars I wish they still made them like Enid, 8 Mar 2009
By Barney McGrew "Charlie" (UK) - See all my reviews

I have just introduced my children to Saint Enid's works, and this was the first one I got hold of. The story centres on the eponymous flying chair, as it takes its two children (Peter and Mollie) on adventures that feature pixies, brownies, talking teddy bears, wizards, witches and a host of other fantastical creatures and situations. I'm surprised this hasn't been made into a film, what with the current appetite for fantasy-themed movies, as the cheeky chair and its wholesome children owners could I'm sure be reproduced lavishly through CGI or even animation.
Anyway, I found myself remembering the stories vividly as I read them to my children; they really are timeless (excuse the cliché) and despite it being easy to laugh at some of the children's' expressions and the more innocent 1950s style, it remains a well-crafted piece of escapism - surely something we all need in these troubled times.
