4.0 out of 5 stars An book for young adults about finding your true identity, 30 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Jamila Gavin has written a number of books which weave eastern philosophy into a strong storyline. This is an excellent example of her work.

The story is about a half Indian boy brought up by his white mother. His father returned to India when he was small. The book also covers earlier generations of the family, and the British Raj, in vivid detail.

The central theme of the book, then, is cultural identity and finding your true self.

This book includes a character who uses drugs, and describes the past tradition of wives dying on the funeral pyres of their husbands. This content is disturbing and is therefore for older, teenage, children (and adults!)
