I have around 50 books on the island because I've been visiting very regularly for 25 years. The Rough Guide is OK but doesn't really "get under the skin" of the place, the Lonely Planet is similar, but this one beats the lot. Frankly it shocked me, because former AA books were "tourist-skating-the-surface" kind of stuff, entirely predictable and superficial...but this one is not! They've obviously got a writer(s) who is familiar with all aspects of life on the island and the information is accurate and easy to access. It is ideal for both the casual tourist and the in-depth independent traveller. It can't do everything in one volume - for instance it is short of budget accommodation, not showing all the hostals available - but if it did it'd weigh the same as "War & Peace". Similarly it cannot cover all the walks' options.
The only mistake I can find is a picture of a car and a bus on the wrong side of the road...obviously printed back to front!
With no knowledge of the island you could buy this book and in 2 weeks there you could take the trip to Cabrera island, eat at a wonderful restaurant up in the mountains, take a scenic train trip, make a couple of mountain walks, visit the Miro foundation and other galleries and museums worthy of your time, see some historical sights, soak sun on the beach, eat tapas in traditional bars, get to grips with the vibrancy of old Palma, sleep in a hilltop monastery, hire a bike and do a route, see a great variety show, hear top classical music, enjoy village fetes and dancing, clock a great concert, have a guided walk, visit a vineyard, take a boat trip - and come home amazed at the variety found in such an accessible island.
If you buy only one book for your visit, this should be it (and no, I have no family or financial connection with AA publications!)
Be aware that hotel rooms have gone up around 20% since this guide was published in 2005 (I've done a review of prices quoted) and also the Pound Sterling has weakened from 1.46 to 1.19 at this time of writing, so Brits. on a budget have taken a double hit. Steve Riches.
