4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely but..., 13 Oct 2005
This is a splendid book, lovely to look at and well put-together. It's also remarkably encyclopaedic, with almost every little nook and cranny of Britain given a mention.

The only reason it doesn't score five stars is that I still wonder just what it's intended to be: it doesn't have the detail level you'd need for a geographical or historical study, and it doesn't have the extensive maps, phone numbers and opening times you'd want for a travel planner. It's really best as a book to sink into on a winter's night.

And if you're looking at your fifteen year-old copy on the shelf, as I was, the answer is yes - it is worth buying a new one.
