4.0 out of 5 stars A respectful treatment of a great writer, 12 Aug 2001
There is little doubt that Isaiah Berlin has a lot to offer political philosophy, and that his more subtle points are hidden away in his discussions about intellectual history. While his famous essay on liberty is the focus of much current debate about the topic, the subtle nuances which some of his less directly political works contain add up to an extremelly interesting political philosophy. John Gray has done well to finally bring this all together in one study and has finally given Belrin the thorough attention he deserves. My only problem with this book is that Gray is somewhat too defensive of Berlin (because I assume there are great similarities that Gray admits between his theory of liberalism and some of Berlin's comments on the incommensurability of values). While trying to defend Berlin from being called a 'post-modernist' or 'relativist', Gray only highlights the possibility that Berlin deserves such labels. He does not successfuly counteract or address the relativist insinuations in Berlin's work and thus only really draws attention to them. Yet this book is a great and long overdue study of Berlin's thoughts. It will hopefully put Berlin's political philosophy onto the agenda in a way not simply limited to his well known thoughts about negative and positive liberty. In my view this is a must for students of political philosophy.
