Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
The fifth edition since 1986, the new version of this perennial tells you everything you could possibly need to know about getting or changing jobs. Great Answers to Tough Interview Questions is actually much more than its title suggests. It tells you, among other useful things, how to find jobs to apply for, how to write a CV, how to dress and what to bone up on in advance as well as showing you how to answer the questions which the interviewer throws at you.

Perhaps the potential employer will phone you once she or he has received your CV. "Put a smile on your face. It improves the timbre of your voice," advises Martin Yate who also suggests you avoid yes/no answers on the phone because they say nothing about your ability. In a face-to-face interview, he tells you, listen to the question. Don't answer one which hasn't been asked. You shouldn't provide superfluous information either and never attempt to do an interview without first doing your homework. You need to know everything you can find out about the company and the job you're being interviewed for. And remember that as well as showing that you can do the job you have to convince the employer that you will fit in, make a contribution and be manageable.

What do you say if asked "When do you expect a promotion?" or "What is your greatest strength?" Or even "What was the last book you read?" Yate provides sensible suggestions. It's all practical, down-to-earth advice and it's not surprising that Great Answers to Tough Interview Questions has sold more than 4 million copies during its 15 year life. If you're preparing for an interview and you're serious, studying this book would be a useful part of the preparation. --Susan Elkin

5.0 out of 5 stars Start to finish guide on getting the job you want, 4 Dec 2001
By A Customer
This is a start to finish guide on getting the job you want as effectively as possible. There is no magic formula and no slight of hand. The book offers practical advice that is relevant to almost any corporate job application. The interview is, quite rightly, only one small part of the process and Yate does well to explain how it fits in.

In particular, this was a great book for me as I was going for a permanent job for the first time in many years of being self-employed, and the new change of direction could have proved a stumbling block but for the great advice in the book.

I recommend reading all of it and not just focusing in on the 'great answers' - more often than not these are always going to be personal anyway. Otherwise you would end up talking corporate-babble.

Good luck.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, 5 Jun 2001
By S. Murrie "interested party" (San Francisco, CA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is indispensible to job hunters in any profession. Once you have read and understood (and understanding is vital) exactly what interviewers are looking for, answering any question they throw at you is easy.

The key concepts in the book are centered around preparation and persistance. I whole-heartedly agree. Particularly, you can never do too much preparation.

I've used this book before every job hunt and everytime I've got multiple interviews and job offers. In fact, I'm often disappointed that the real-life interviewer's questions weren't nearly as tough as those in the book! You end up having to lead the interviewer to tougher questions in order to get your points across.

Criticisms? Well, yes, the dressing style guide is a little out of date The general prinicples are fine, just take the specifics with a pinch of salt. Also, the author's advice is sometimes a little pushy, perhaps because the book was originally an American publication. In the UK, a little more diplomacy might be appropriate. As always, one should always apply one's own judgement and style in such matters.

In conclusion, a fantastic book - I wouldn't be where I am without it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Needs serious updating
This booked feels very dated. There are fashions in interview questions, like everything else and this doesn't seem to have been updated since 1986. Tartan suits anyone?

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
