Product Description

Product Description

In 1985 Hudson visited the village of Dulaba in the Gambia to help in some field studies there. He was so intrigued by what he saw that he decided to return. The book tells of the lives of the women, devout Muslims, who are circumcised in an all-female ritual, but who sing ribald songs.

4.0 out of 5 stars An honest, eye-opening travel memoir, 18 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Actually this book probably shouldn't be considered a "travel" memoir per se: the author stayed in one place, the Gambia, throughout. I have never been there, but I was living in neighboring Mali when I read the book. I found his insights into his situation and the people around him very evocative. Mostly I was impressed with his honesty in describing his own thoughts and feelings, his enchantment with certain experiences, his infatuation with women.... It all rang very true, and although this is no free-ranging travelogue presenting an overview of the country, I'd recommend it to readers interested in Africa generally and the Gambia particularly.
