Review
Often mistakenly described as a comic novel, this work deals in its third quarter exclusively with the World War II army on the home front. Powell himself, as a sort of a career officer, was fascinated with the army and his entry into it as a mature man of 34 was wonderfully fortuitous. His descriptions of barracks life at a certain level are unparalleled. The whole work is arguably the finest English novel of our time. (Kirkus UK)
