5.0 out of 5 stars Harshly realistic portrait of a farming family's migration, 15 Aug 2000
By A Customer
Steinbeck illustrates the Joad family's Westward journey with a gritty hand. Interloping chapters render a descriptive view of the 1930s displacement and the effects on both the resident and migrating communities.

Thoroughly well considered and written, among the most important and provocative upshots is its absolute relevance today.

This is a story of desperate people looking for a new life. Solidariety hate exploitation ... a lot of bloody life. Wonderfull.

5.0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece, 3 Feb 2000
By A Customer
As so oft occurs when a literary classic makes the journey from yellowing pages to the silver screen, it loses alot, if not all, of its meaning. The latter certainly happened when this book was transmogrified in to moving pictures. As it is here, however, it is nothing less than a classic. The Great Depression of the '30s hits the Joad family and they set off West in search of the American dream (as shown on brightly coloured leaflets). This is not what they find. It was written after Steinbeck took a similar journey (though in quite different circumstances - Of Mice and Men being quite popular at the time) himself, and this does give the text a definite edge. The book ends in what was seen at the time as being quite a controversial way (thus why it was ignored in the poor film version (Oscar my eye!)), but this is in fact, in my opinion, a great apopheosis.
