Product Description
Synopsis
Steinbeck's celebration of his native California is a portrait of the discord and joy between the colourful and cosmopolitan characters living among the flophouses, honky-tonks, scattered lots and sardine canneries of Monterey Bay.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book that will make you stop, shake your head and smile., 10 Oct 1998
By A Customer
This book is beautiful, even if the characters and events aren't. It will make you stop, shake your head and smile, then carry on reading again so you don't miss a moment of pleasure.

Steinbeck not only captures the flavour of life in the small coastal town of California that was his humble origin, he captures its essence. Steinbeck's kind hand lays open the human soul to reveal its motivations, faiblesses and dignity. His subjects are the base, the meek and marginalised elements of society, but Steinbeck shows them to be enduring, entertaining and capable of surprising acts of nobility. Steinbeck enobles.

Thankfully for those of you who, like me, finished "Cannery Row" wanting more, Steinbeck wrote "Sweet Thursday". Though not quite as good, it satisfies the need. Both books are nothing less than you would expect from one of the greatest American writers of the twentieth century.
