Product Description

Review
"'There's plenty of flair in the plot, and it all gels magnificently in this tale of a serial vicar-murderer" Yorkshire Post 'An intellectual and earthy detective, Charlie Priest could well become for Yorkshire what Wycliffe is for Cornwall' Publishing News"

Product Description
When Georgina, eight-year-old daughter of businessman Miles Dewhurst, is kidnapped, DI Charlie Priest and his colleagues at Heckley police station soon start to fear the worst. Dewhurst himself is devastated and willing to give up everything to raise the ransom that might be required. But Charlie is not convinced that Dewhurst is all that he seems. Meanwhile, these are dangerous times for clergymen. Two are found dead under suspicious circumstances and a third is murdered by a shotgun blast. The deaths are linked by a picture of a Destroying Angel mushroom, left beside the body of the most recent victim, but why would a serial killer focus on men of the cloth? As he races against time to find Georgina, and happens upon the first real clue in the hunt for the Mushroom Man, events take a dramatic personal turn, for Charlie is more deeply embroiled in one of the cases than he realises.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every new one gets better, 11 Dec 2004
Stuart Pawson is one of the country's best writers in the 'police' genre. He is also under rated and under exposed. He writes about what he knows and the humour is typical Yorkshire. The rhubarb sheds actually existed and maybe still do! Charlie Priest is the type of copper we would all like to know, human, trustworthy and sincere. Eventhough this book is an early one it is well worth reading again. The later books are just as good if not better. Stuart Pawson is a consistently good author and I'm just waiting for the next one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Second book in the DI Charlie Priest Series, 20 Dec 2007
By J. Chippindale (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
Stuart Pawson had a career as a mining engineer He followed this with a spell working for the probation service, before he became a full-time writer. He lives in the pleasant waterside village of Fairburn in Yorkshire. A well known haunt for bird watchers from far and wide.

Stuart Pawson has a gem of a character in Charlie Priest, a copper's copper with the tenacity of a bull terrier and the staying power of a steeple chaser. Not much gets past Charlie Priest and the books featuring him are a joy to read. The dry wit of the author transmitted through his lead character is typical of Yorkshire and his storylines are based on the way a detective would approach a case, rather than the crash bang wallop type writing of many so called crime writers.

This is one of the early offerings of the author, but his writing is consistently good right through from his earliest books to the present and not one has disappointed me so far. Living within a 10 mile radius of where most of the books are set is of course a benefit and makes them that little more atmospheric for me personally. However it would not matter if I lived in Timbuktu the books are still extremely readable and entertaining.

PS: The last time I looked the rhubarb sheds were still there.

1.0 out of 5 stars A poor example of the genre
When i started reading the book I was enjoying it. Unfortunately it then began to be very cliched and poorly written. There is also a nasty moral tone to the book. Read more
