Product Description

Review

Its release timed to coincide with the popular TV series starring Felicity Kendall and Pam Ferris, this novel is by way of a prequel, introducing us to Rosemary Boxer and Laura Thyme in the period just prior to their meeting. Rosemary, a lecturer in plant pathology, has just been made redundant. Laura's husband has, without warning, left her for a younger and thinner woman. Brought together by their mutual acquaintance with a murder victim, their friendship blossoms. Laura has a police background and Rosemary is familiar with toxic plants so combining their talents, they soon uncover the method of murder. Next they reveal the cause of the mysterious skin disease suffered by Rosemary's wealthy former student, and finally unmask the murderer, who is found curled up in her mother's lap, sobbing. Not to be taken too seriously, this is an entertaining and well-written piece of crime fiction, with believable characters and a plausible plot. As a bonus, it's strewn throughout with snippets of information about gardening. A good stocking filler. (Kirkus UK)

4.0 out of 5 stars Delightful cozy., 24 Jun 2005
By A. J Thompson "voyagersaus" (Western Australia) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Laura Thyme's husband has done to her what men sometimes do in the throes of midlife crisis - dumped her for a younger woman and done a bunk. Considering who to unload on she finds her choices sadly limited, and so leaves immediately to stay with an old friend of her husband's who she's sure will be sympathetic. Not quite so; in staying at the hotel close to the Trents she meets Rosemary Boxer who has had to the back teeth with the male of the species as well, for differing reasons. Rosemary, a university botanist, has been called out to visit an old student and give advice on some of his ailing trees. More ails than just the trees; Daniel is suffering from some unknown de-habilitating and horrific skin disease that has him confined to his mansion of his house, looked after in a precious manner by his snippet of a wife. There's more afoot, as is proved with the death of Sam Trent, business partner in the nursery business to the tragic Daniel.

With new found comrade-in-arms Laura in tow (an ex policewoman herself, so very handy in these matters) Rosemary investigates what appears to her sharp eye to be the most suspicious of car crashes. There are too many accidents occurring around one little village and they all have connections to the manor house and it's odd occupants. The villagers all have their own ideas on this one and it's up to the two women to sort through the rubbish and find the truth.

This is the first book in a series written by the creator of the ITV1 television mystery drama of the same name. In the fashion of the best cozies, yes, tea and amateur sleuthing feature with sharp, well written characters acting outside of their profession to fix what has gone wrong. This book is a delight, starring two of the most likable modern day and acerbic Miss Marples that you'll ever meet. For the cozy connoisseur, this novel should not be passed by.
