3.0 out of 5 stars Not one of Ripley's best, 24 Aug 2007
By honestfi "Fiona" (North Wales) - See all my reviews
I can't quite put my finger on why House is not a favourite. Maybe it's the plot, based around Botox, which for most is a joke anyway, and the remainder of the population a bit too close to the bone. Or perhaps it's because Angel seems a bit henpecked in this one, a little more harassed than usual, and not quite the same laid back, streetwise and sharp talking dude that we have all come to love. It could be, that, like Armstrong, he is sharper and happier on the streets of London, rather than the wilds of Cambridge. Or that Ripley repeats the same joke over and over to the point of extreme irritation (the original joke being only mildly funny). Or perhaps that Salsa and Trabants are not my choice of reading matter. Or dodgy Russians.

That aside, I loved the subplot, to the point of wishing it were the main plot - even though it is fairly obvious from the start, and you wonder why Angel didn't see it straightaway after meeting horsey Scarlett and Colonel Colman. Yep - you got it, didn't you? And the typical explosive ending with a good sprinkling of farce (in a nice way) is enough to make it an enjoyable read. It is also a brave person to write about their own health experiences, with humour, when the scars are probably still pretty raw. Ripley even links House with Double Take (and Double Take 'borrows' some Angel character names) - he just can't shake off the Angel influence, can he? And quite right too.

Angel's Share redresses the balance in triplicate, in my opinion, so I can forgive Ripley for this one. And House isn't awful...just not up to the usual standard.
