Product Description

Product Description

Newly-promoted Inspector Ghote is thrilled to be granted casual leave until he takes up his post, as it allows him to spend time with his heavily pregnant wife, who is desperate to watch a showing of "Hamlet" at the cinema. Their plans are ruined, however, since Sir Rustom Engineer requires Ghote to investigate the suicide of his friend's wife. Worried about his wife's imminent delivery, Ghote nevertheless travels to the home of Mr. Dawkins, where he is unconvinced by the story of Iris Dawkins' death. Especially when he recognises the officer in charge, Darrani, well-known for his close-mindedness. Ghote is determined to investigate further, with a Hamlet-esque awareness of how deceiving appearances can really be...

2.0 out of 5 stars Give the reader credit for a little intelligence!, 12 May 2009
By Peter Ross (Falmouth, Cornwall UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I enjoy a good "Whodunnit", and after reading the blurb on the cover of this book in our local library I got the feeling that perhaps I was missing out on the "engaging character" of Inspector Ghote, and the ability of the author to weave a complicated and difficult to solve mystery.

Well maybe this book is not representative of the others, being the most recent, and clearly appealing to readers familiar with the character who would welcome a look at the way he began his career as a senior detective. However to me it appeared to be a pot-boiler with a totally unconvincing plot which insulted the intelligence of the reader by its sheer implausibility.

It is not possible to criticize the plot in any detail without giving away the ending, but suffice to say that it is just not possible to accept that anyone would behave in the way portrayed.

Apart from that, I found the character of Ghote (and we never discovered how his name is pronounced - is it Goat or Goatee?), far from being endearing, was rather irritating, and his powers of deduction so slow that it took him three or four more chapters to catch up with what the reader had already worked out.

I reluctantly crossed the author's name from list of books to read in the future. I would be pleased to hear from any Ghote enthusiast who might tell me that this was the exception that proves the rule, and that there are other far better Ghote mysteries that I would enjoy instead of this apology for a story.
