4.0 out of 5 stars One of the best How To Write books I've ever bought, 27 Oct 1999
I have about 9 or so writing guides in my collection, but this is the only book explains how to plot effectively, ensuring that your story doesn't sag in the middle. While reading this book, so many ideas came to mind...I just had to get them down on paper. The only disappointment was that there were no specific examples. It would have been nice to see a couple of plot plans in the books, but otherwise an extremely worthwhile addition to my library.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book on plotting., 27 Aug 2002

(REAL NAME)
Jean goes out of her way to not only explain how to plot a story properly, but also to explain why its a good idea.

This is not a book about 'how to apply a story formula and end up with a novel', but more a 'here are some good plotting techniques and how you can apply some, if not all of them'.

I'd recommend this book to anybody interested in plotting, because the book does live up to its name.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre effort!!, 24 Feb 2006
By A Customer
This book is of marginal value for anyone wanting substantive advice on techniques for plotting a novel and will do very litte to spark your enthusiasm for writing. It is incredibly dry and at times dull!! However, its greatest failure lies in the absence of anything new and its essentially shallow exploration of the topic. Indeed, this topic is covered far better in Obstfeld's Novelist's Essential Guide to Crafting Scenes and Kress Dynamic Characters, despite being the focus of neither book.
