5.0 out of 5 stars Post-Apocalyptic Genius, 30 Jan 2006
By Wordy (Cromer, Norfolk United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
The Chrysalids tells the story of an isolated remnant of human civilisation struggling to rebuild in a world that was devastated (by thermonuclear war - although he never says this directly it is clear from the effects he describes).

The story works superbly by not providing too much detail - it invites the reader to fill in the blanks and is a much more intelligent take on the post apocalyptic genre. The 'how it happened' aspect of the story is secondary to dealing with the human issues.

In particular Wyndham's vision of a society that has reverted to an extreme paranoid interpretation of the bible is superb - the paranoia over checking for mutants amongst them has strong overtones of the Salem witch trials etc.

I am a relative newcomer to John Wyndham and read The Day of the Triffids before moving on to his other work. Having now read most of his novels I would rate The Chrysalids as his best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth reading, even if you haven't read Day of the Triffids., 19 Aug 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Chrysalids (Paperback)
"The Chrysalids" is probably my favourite of all Wyndham's books, if not my favourite sci-fi book. I especially like its genre - the "world after a disaster" story. Wyndham introduces the subject of telepathy. This introduction is fascinating ,presenting new problems to the reader - what to do when Anne ( a charcter in the book) gets married to a non-telepathic person . The repercussions are numerous! Wyndham's character development, as always, is excellent, and you can picture the characters clearly. With other writers, the characterization is less powerful - you end up "seeing" the main character as a lookalike Luke Skywalker! I dislike intensely one character in the book - David's father, Joseph Strorm, because he's too self righteous and high and mighty. Wyndham's drawing of a person and his soul wins again! When I first read "The Chrysalids", I wanted Strorm to get killed by someone! The novel is a really good read , one that serves as a good inroduction to John Wyndham and his writing - no, you don't have to read "Day of the Triffids" first!I am already re-reading "The Chrysalids". How come Wyndham didnt write a sequel ???!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Chrysalids, 4 Oct 2007
By Spider Monkey (UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
This review is from: The Chrysalids (Paperback)
Wyndham was way ahead of his time writing about genetic mutations before modern genetic engineering, which in hindsight make this book all the more potent and disturbing. This is a great story about the world in the future where genetic mutations are classed as the devils work and are stamped out. It focuses on a group of children with unusual abilities who are only finding out about themselves before they are hunted down by those wishing to eradicate them. It is written in Wyndham's usual gripping style and keeps you turning the pages right until the end. It is a short book by today's standards, but every page is perfectly crafted and keeps you engaged with the characters and storyline. Well worth a read.
