Product Description

This book examines the evolution of British propaganda practice during the course of the twentieth century. Written by an internationally-renowned expert in the area, this book covers the period from the First World War to the present day, including discussions of recent developments in information warfare. It includes analysis of film, radio, television and the press, and places the British experience within the wider international context. Drawing together elements of the author's previously published work, the book demonstrates how Britain has established a model for democratic propaganda world-wide.This is the first volume in the new International Communications series, edited by Philip M Taylor.

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting and detailed account of British propaganda., 9 Jan 2002
By Mrs. Joanne Toon "Toonster" (Bristol, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
"We're telling lies, we daren't tell the public the truth," Lord Rothmere 1917. So begins a fascinating account of propaganda throughout the 20th century. From its conception during World War 1 through to "Democratic Propaganda" in the 1990s, propaganda has been viewed as a way of getting large numbers of people to think and act in a way that benefits the state. Philip M. Taylor takes a critical view of the development of propaganda from something seen as unpleasant but necessary during World War 1 and the aftermath through to its liberal use in newspapers and advertising today. Each area of propaganda; posters and leaflets, TV, radio and film, is covered in depth. However, World Wars 1 and 2 are discussed in greater detail than the Cold War and beyond. A highly entertaining and thought provoking book.
