Product Description
Synopsis
In 1969 when Jeremy Beades arrived in Northern Ghana, there were over 150,000 immigrant Yoruba traders in the state. Holding a dominant position in the country's distribution system, they were the largest single group of immigrant traders in Ghana. "Strangers and Traders" describes their mass migration from Northern Yoruba throughout the 20th century, and the trading strategies contributing to their commercial success. Mixing macro- and micro- level approaches, the book maps case-studies of individuals against larger changes in the Ghanaian economy. It explains why the Yoruba were so successful in accumulating capital and penetrating both rural and urban markets.
