4.0 out of 5 stars A relevant discussion of Gray's work. , 23 Sep 2007
By Thorgerdur J. Asgeirsd (Reykjavik, Iceland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought "The Arts of Alasdair Gray" because I am currently writing my B.A. thesis on "1982, Janine", and I must say it's the most comprehensive source I've found on Gray's work so far. The book consists of twelve chapters, each written by a different author. The first chapter offers a biography of Gray and a chronology of his life and work, while the other chapters discuss various subjects, such as Gray's visual art, his Glaswegian settings, the post modern in relation with Gray's work, the character of Jock McLeish, pornographic elements in "Something Leather" and "1982 Janine", and so on.
The book doesn't offer a collection of essays, rather than a continuous narrative, as each chapter stands complete on it's own. I recommend this book to any Gray scholar, as it offerers a valuable discussion of Gray's work.
