3.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat Interesting BUCKLES, 27 Oct 2009
This is one of the beautifully produced new series of little Shire Library books, published in 2008. It has over 50 pages with mostly excellent colour photographs & some fascinating text by Alan & Gillian Meredith. The history of buckles & their manufacture will be illuminating to anyone with even a slight interest in the subject. In my case, the buckle interest is secondary to a button interest: buckles turn up frequently in button collections. I was, therefore, surprised & disappointed to see such a lack of detail regarding 20th century materials from these 2 authors, who themselves are expert in the button field. Too many vague references to "plastic material" & "from the 20th century" to satisfy my desire for information. Indeed, very few of the huge range of 20th century plastics are included, which is sad as the invention of synthetic plastics revolutionised the button & buckle making industries & deserves a much broader section than is permitted in this book. Note that values are not included.
