Product Description

Oft-overshadowed by the imposing buildings that line the River Thames, the bridges of London are an intriguing part of the capital, past and present. This book traces the history of all 33 Thames bridges within Greater London, exploring the fascinating architecture and unique stories from Hampton Court Bridge in the west to the iconic Tower Bridge in the east. Accompanied throughout by colour photographs of the present bridges, as well as detailed paintings and engravings of the earlier structures that once stood in their place, this is a fully illustrated and absorbing narrative for anyone with an interest in the history of London.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST FOR ALL LONDON BOOK LOVERS, 9 Dec 2008
By W. Grynberg (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
'London's Bridges' is a new well-written and highly-researched book by Peter Matthews, a London Blue Badge guide. The author outlines the history of the 33 Thames bridges in Greater London, including all the previous ones. Lavishly printed on good quality paper and with many high quality photographs and illustrations. Included are images of previous bridges, as well as many designs of bridges that weren't built. Complemented by lots of good anecdotes, including a feature on the 'Waterloo suicides'. All in all 176 pages of sheer pleasure.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good historical guide, 2 April 2009
By C. Parcell - See all my reviews

I enjoyed this book tremendously having done the Thames Path on both sides of the River from Teddington. One flaw with it is it does not have a map showing where the Bridges are. I have also purchased 'London's Bridges crossing the Royal River' by Ian Pay, and where this seems to be more a Coffee Table book with nice pictures it does have a nice map showing the location of the bridges and a timeline showing when they were built and what monarch was on the throne at that time. Out of the two though I found the Shire History book the most informative.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read, 4 Jan 2009
Part of the new "Shire History" range, and quite a departure being a full-sized publication rather than the small format concise guides for which Shire is well known.

This beautifully produced volume features all 33 bridges in what is now Greater London, arranged by geographical location, starting with Hampton Court bridge upstream and ending with Tower Bridge downstream. Every bridge, no matter how mundane, gets at least a couple of pages and excellent photographs. Naturally the likes of London Bridge and Tower Bridge get considerably more than this. It also includes beautiful reproductions of original drawings, engravings and artworks by the likes of Whistler, Canaletto and Monet.

It's written in the classic no-nonsense Shire style, launching straight into the subject, with each bridge forming a stand-alone chapter, making it easy to dip in and out of. It would also form an excellent reference work for anyone interested in London's history.
