Review

'revelatory of the history of stage magic and many personalities, it also reveals some tricks and encourages having a go'
--School Librarian

Product Description

Ever since the author Paul Kieve was given a magic set at the age of ten, he has been buying magic books, props and posters and honing his skills as a magician. He keeps all his magical paraphenalia in his house in Hackney, right around the corner from the magnificent Hackney Empire, a venue played at by all the great illusionists of the golden era of magic, some hundred years ago. One day, as Paul is on the phone to his friend, sitting in his 'Poster Room', chatting to a friend about how well his magic show went from the night before, he gets a strange sensation ...Suddenly, the huge figure of Alexander steps out of the poster and starts telling Paul off for getting too big-headed! Alexander and the other brilliant magicians in the posters are going to show Paul what magic is really about!

5.0 out of 5 stars A magical magic book..., 5 Nov 2007
By D. Wood (Wimbledon UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book would have delighted me when I was 10. But I have had to wait half a century for it! And it has delighted me now. It is three books in one. First it tells an imaginative story in which magical things happen to the storyteller - the fantasy springs from a real setting and situation, and is all the better for that. Second it is a magical history book, relating fascinating info about some of the truly GREAT magicians of the past. Third it is a practical magic manual, explaining clearly how to perform some baffling magic feats. This combination is truly original and engrossing, and will surely encourage its readers to enjoy magic(and the theatre), to appreciate the hard work needed to become a star performer, and to make a start by learning some cunning tricks which will fool family and friends. Great fun, too. A cool read! With a foreword by Daniel 'Harry Potter' Radcliffe no less.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Magic, 26 Oct 2007
By A. Glover "ceasario" - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought Hocus Pocus on a recommendation from a friend, I'd read Carter Beats the Devil and books on Houdini so I was interested in the subject, and I was absolutely delighted with the book. Though aimed at a younger audience, I found so much to enjoy, from the anecdotes about magical history to the tricks you learn as you read. It's written in a really accessible style, not patronising but entertaining while teaching you so much. This will be an excellent Christmas present to all budding Harry's and Hermione's (and possibly a few of us McGonagall's and Dumbledores!)
Read and Enjoy.
