Review

PRAISE FOR THE HOUSE AT MIDNIGHT 'I finished reading The House at Midnight (much too) late last night. For the last quarter I could hardly read fast enough and my heart was beating madly. She is such a good writer. It's an exciting, romantic, gripping story of secrets and suspense - at once modern and classic in its form and content' Lesley Glaister 'The House at Midnight is a stunning piece of modern gothic. Gripping, accomplished and, ultimately, mesmerising, it represents the arrival of a major literary talent' John Connolly 'Psychological suspense as elegant as a Swiss watch but as powerful as a locomotive ... subtle, intelligent, accessible, and highly recommended' Lee Child 'Gripping and tense with an atmosphere which holds you in thrall' Susan Hill

Product Description

One stifling night in a bar in Soho, Kate meets Richard - powerful, sensual Richard. Going home with him that night is reckless and exhilarating, their connection electric. Now, eighteen months later, Kate is fleeing London for an old coastguard's cottage on the Isle of Wight, determined to forget Richard for ever. In winter, however, the island is locked down, wary of outsiders, and there is little to distract her from her memories. Within days, a local woman, Alice Frewin, goes missing from her boat, and though no body is found there are whispers of suicide. Kate is quickly drawn into Alice's world but all the time Richard - powerful, unstable Richard - looms larger and larger over her own...A tense and atmospheric tale of jealousy, obsession and betrayal, "The Bed I Made" establishes Lucie Whitehouse as a master of her genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Dark but Fabulous read, 10 Jan 2010
I'm not in the habit of reviewing people's work who I know personally, because the 'biased' accusation is just too easy to cast and believability status is reduced, but I'm taking a chance and making an exception with this one because it's a fabulous read and I feel very strongly about recommending it.
The title gives the perfect indication what this book is all about - I shan't spoil the surprises, especially as I didn't see them coming and wouldn't want to ruin things for other readers, but making one's bed and having to lie on it sums things up completely. I found the characters beautifully drawn: flawed, realistic, hypnotic and chilling - but always believable. And, for anyone who wants to see a master of language at play, read the descriptive passages in this book and weep.

Best read when you are in the mood for a book that pulls you in slowly so you don't see the hooks sinking into you. Dark, sexual, scary with a great plot. And, thank goodness, with no 'arty farty' 'what the hell happened?' ending.

I enjoyed it very very much and would have no hesitation in saying 'read this book if you fancy the blurb'. My kind of book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Compelling, passionate and beautifully written, 28 Jan 2010
By Love Books "Jessie" (Durham, England) - See all my reviews

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
This book starts with its narrator, Katie, fleeing London to rent a cottage on the Isle of Wight after being badly hurt after, apparently, being knocked off her bike. We find out that she has been having an affair with a man called Richard, who may or may not be the love of her life, and that she is very frightened of something. Her best friend Helen had her doubts about Richard from the start and I tended to agree with her. At the same time a woman goes missing whilst out sailing her boat and nobody knows what has happened to her. The two storylines weave seamlessly through this very good book which keeps you turning the pages to find out what happened to the woman and why, and also the truth about Richard and the real reason why Katie's hiding.

The writing really is excellent, with the descriptions of the coast, the sea and Katie's cottage being superb. She gradually begins to rebuild her life and make new friends on the island and while that aspect of her life improves, things are going very badly wrong elsewhere. There is a building sense of fear and unease and you know that something terrible is going to happen before the end of the book.

It's difficult to say anything more without giving away major elements of the plot. I would definitely give The Bed I Made five stars for the writing and for being so readable - I got through it in a couple of days despite job etc but it lost a star for a couple of plot implausabilities towards the end that just stopped it from being perfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling second novel, 9 Feb 2010
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
The blurb for this book is quite ambiguous, and when I started reading the story I wasn't 100% sure what the book was going to be about. There seemed to be a relationship gone wrong, mixed with the story of the missing woman which seemed to have little relevance to anything. However, all soon starts to become clear, and what I liked about this book was that the story unravelled slowly.

Kate is a very good heroine. She's made a mistake but she realises it and flees to the Isle of Wight, a place that holds happy childhood memories for her. But Richard is never far from her mind, even when she starts to move on emotionally. I agree with one of the other reviewers that Kate's link to Alice (the missing woman) is a little tenuous, but as the story went on I could see why the author had brought in the link with another vulnerable woman.

The reader can really feel Kate's worry and terror at times, together with her need to move on and sever Richard's hold on her. I loved the author's descriptions of the Isle of Wight, as I have enjoyed holidays there, and I thought she captured the small town, out of season, feel very well.

This is a fab read, and a good example of the genre of the psychological thriller. It built up to an exciting conclusion, which I read just before going to sleep, and which was obviously still in my head as I woke up with a start during the night! I will certainly read more of Lucie Whitehouse's work.
