5.0 out of 5 stars Borges, labyrinths and Tango, 25 May 2008
By Pauline Mulford (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was originally attracted to the book by the cover of the tango dancers but the title is key - the story of a chase to hear 'The Tango Singer' of mythical qualities somewhere in Buenos Aires. In a complicated city, ever changing on so many levels make this seem a near impossible task. I had to read it twice - straight away - last year and reread it this year before I parted with it to a friend at AT lessons!

There are good reviews on amazon.com which go into detail however; we must thank Anne McLean the translator for bringing us closer to Martinez style and his haunting characteristation of Argentine History as a master for weaving one story into another. Translators don't often get enough credit so seek out work by McLean as well as Martinez who are able to widen our literary world for us. Thank you.

Also, for introducing me to Borges and increasing my Amazon bill.....

5.0 out of 5 stars Dreamlike, hypnotic, utterly captivating, 4 Jul 2008
By Sofia (Bristol, UK) - See all my reviews
Have just finished this book and I just want to pick it up and start all over again!

The story follows American student Bruno on his research trip to Buenos Aires. Amid his love of the city and its people and geography, he becomes steadily obsessed with tracking down an elusive and enigmatic tango singer, whose voice has never been recorded, yet by legend transcends the beauty of the tango itself. Coupled with this is his desire to unravel the mystery of "the aleph", which contains knowledge of all the universe and is fabled to be hidden within his building.

Both pacey and dreamy, full of rich and vibrant characters and stories engulfing the turbulent history of Argentina; this novel brings together a love of literature (with many links to Borges and others), music (the history of the tango), Argentine history and the history of Buenos Aires itself. It is enchanting, thrilling and absorbing even if you know very little about the country (as I do) and I suspect even more so if you are well-versed in Borges and his contemporaries. This is a love song for Buenos Aires and a truly great read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Borges revisited, 21 May 2008
This review is from: The Tango Singer (Hardcover)
If you love Borges, and Argentina, read this book: a journey through the modern labyrinth of Buenos Aires, in search of Borges's mythical 'Aleph', guided by the haunting canciones of a dying tango singer.
