How it Works 'How it Works gets better and better as it goes along This book has a soul' Guardian Zoo 'A breathless thriller' Observer

Product Description

Asakusa, Tokyo , 11pm . A whole world of neon, and one lost teenager. Adam can't think how it had ever seemed like a good idea to come to Tokyo , and kind of not mention it to his parents But his sister's missing, last seen here, and with everyone at home apparently doing sweet FA about it, he didn't have much choice. With only five days to get his act together, Adam has got to sift through the seedy back-street hostess bars, dodge the local yakuza and find out where the hell Charlie is in the craziness that is Tokyo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Witty, page-turning thriller, 14 Aug 2006

I don't often find that I am swept up by novels, but I could hardly put Tokyo down. The characters are all well drawn, and the teenage protaganist acts in a quite believable way.

The narration is witty and off-hand in a way that you could almost imagine Terry Pratchett writing, while the story presses on without pause.

I'll be seeking out more from Mr. Marks!

4.0 out of 5 stars Bustling, bold and full of strong images, 11 Feb 2007

Adam goes to Tokyo to track down his sister Charlie who has gone missing. This is essentially a thriller combined with some romance.

I am surprised by how much I enjoyed this. The storyline, although at times a little unrealistic, moves at a pace. You keep turning the pages and it's a delight to read a book where you don't already know what's going to happen, some great twists and turns.

I especially enjoyed the Tokyo setting, I think the author really got the sense of place across, there are some scenes in the book which will stay with me due to how well-described the bustling, busy and mad streets of Tokyo seemed. The city was brought to life vividly. This is definitely a teen read, some swearing and mild sexual references.

Thoroughly enjoyable and I am now off to find another book by Graham Marks. Refreshing to read something so different which doesn't dumb down for it's teenage audience.
