4.0 out of 5 stars Another piece in Hoban's jigsaw?, 4 April 2006
By D. A. Harris "davidharris52" (Oxford, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Come Dance With Me (Paperback)
There is a basic difficulty reviewing "Come Dance" since, like many of Hoban's other recent books it does not stand alone but forms part of what is clearly intended to be (or is becoming) a series. These books share a general setting - middle aged men, usually American and generally artists, musicians or writers living in London, fairly comfortably off, reflecting on their lives, forming relationships: sometimes (though less in this than others) with a dash of the magical - lovers meeting in a dreamworld, hauntings, coincidences - but done with a light touch (despite the references to HP Lovecraft, MR James and, in this book, Susan Hill's "The Woman in Black" this is a world of the bizarre, rather than one of horror).

The present book has just this background (with excursions to Hawaii) and those who enjoyed earlier ones will like this too. But despite the shared background, each book is different and Hoban manages to explore new themes each time - here a lost child (or was he really lost?) and the effect of that loss on his mother. It is extraordinary how much he manages to cram in to what is a fairly short book, told in short chapters - and on top of this we have characters from earlier books making walk on appearances updating us, as it were, on how they have been getting on since we last saw them.

So, generally excellent - I would have given it five stars but I'm not sure it quite the zip of some of the earlier stories - and definitely one not to miss.

3.0 out of 5 stars A touch too much redux, 19 Aug 2008
By Pablo K (London, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Come Dance With Me (Paperback)
Russell Hoban is amazing. You should read his books. But this one was a little too much of a redux of other stuff, particularly The Medusa Frequency, without quite achieving that hauntingness that makes Hoban so worth your time. The music sub-themes don't quite work, although the poetry and lyrics do, and the deviations on Iraq seem too forced and too shallow. Solid, but not up to the usual standards.
