'As a miniature study in colonialism and as an lesson in what happens to enlightened values under duress - almost an adult Lord of the Flies - his book is hard to beat' Financial Times 'Peter Morgan is an able storyteller, giving good detail on the social and political life of the island' The Times

Peter Morgan brings a hectic immediacy to the story, which is illustrated with before and after images of the island.

3.0 out of 5 stars This book is well worth reading!, 29 Feb 2004
By A Customer
I heard about this book from a friend who had recommended it to me, so I hadn't got a clue what it was about! I started reading it with an open mind and was genuinely suprised by how good it was! It really gives an insight into how it must have been to survive a volcanic eruption; this book really made me think. Well worth a read!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book, 5 Feb 2003
This review is from: The Fire Mountain (Hardcover)
Peter Morgan uncovers the story of the 'most marvellous man on earth' - Ludger Sylbaris, who survived a devastating volcanic eruption which destroyed the capital of Martinique in 1902. Fire Mountain is a beautifully written and painstakingly researched account of what happened to Sylbaris himself - and the political renaissance of Martinique as it shook off the French colonial yoke. There are fascinating documents and photographs from the time of the disaster, and from Barnum's circus, which toured Sylbaris around the world as a freak. Peter Morgan writes vividly about the events of 1902 and beyond - and expertly brings this piece of history alive.
