5.0 out of 5 stars The Man Behind Rupert, 6 Oct 2004
First, a note of caution: this is not a biography of Rupert Bear. It is rather, as it says on the cover, a book about the man who wrote and illustrated through the period widely held to be the "Golden Age" of Nutwood. This is not to say that Rupert is not prominent in the narrative, but he is placed in the context of a man's life.
Caroline Bott has devoted perhaps half the book to a biography of 'Fred.' This not always a flowing narrative, since she uses his own correspondence for much of it, but this adds a personal feel to it that more than compensates. Much of the remainder is devoted to his journals covering two trips to Wales and one to the Middle East. The Welsh chapters will be of particular interest to Rupertologists, who will surely recognize some of the sketches reprinted as places that Rupert has visited.
The last 35 pages are devoted to a comprehensive catalogue of Bestall's published work, including Rupert.
This is not a book for the casual reader, but for the Rupertologists for whom it is written, it should be required reading!

4.0 out of 5 stars A must to find out more about the illustrator of Rupert Bear, 9 Jan 2006

As a long time Rupert Bear fan, I've occasionally seen prints of other works by Alfred Bestall. I bought this book to find out more about him. It's a great little book, with some plates of his other work.

It does not focus on Rupert, though, so if this is what you are after this may not be the book for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars The best Rupert illustrator of all..., 29 Aug 2009
By Peter Coupe (North Yorkshire) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have loved Rupert books all my life.
Being a mature person - born in the 1950s - it is one of the things that we grew up with back then, alongside the Beano, Dandy, Dan Dare and Ovaltine at bedtime.
Today all this would be dismissed as 'sad', but back then it was the iPod of entertainment.
The life of Alfred Bestall was fascinating, from the fact that he never took one penny for all the Rupert stories he illustrated (as he believed that the taint of money might lead to what we would probably call 'commercialization', which he thought was wrong in books for children!) to his descriptions of meetings with The McCartney's (Paul, Linda and the children) to discuss the use of the images from the books in McCartney's animations.
You just have to read it to see what a fascinating and hard working man he was - I cannot conceive of doing the work he did in twice the time he had, let alone all the other things he was involved in.
If Rupert is anywhere on your childhood radar you will almost certainly enjoy this book.
