5.0 out of 5 stars The Man Behind Rupert, 6 Oct 2004
First, a note of caution: this is not a biography of Rupert Bear. It is rather, as it says on the cover, a book about the man who wrote and illustrated through the period widely held to be the "Golden Age" of Nutwood. This is not to say that Rupert is not prominent in the narrative, but he is placed in the context of a man's life.
Caroline Bott has devoted perhaps half the book to a biography of 'Fred.' This not always a flowing narrative, since she uses his own correspondence for much of it, but this adds a personal feel to it that more than compensates. Much of the remainder is devoted to his journals covering two trips to Wales and one to the Middle East. The Welsh chapters will be of particular interest to Rupertologists, who will surely recognize some of the sketches reprinted as places that Rupert has visited.
The last 35 pages are devoted to a comprehensive catalogue of Bestall's published work, including Rupert.
This is not a book for the casual reader, but for the Rupertologists for whom it is written, it should be required reading!

4.0 out of 5 stars A must to find out more about the illustrator of Rupert Bear, 9 Jan 2006

As a long time Rupert Bear fan, I've occasionally seen prints of other works by Alfred Bestall. I bought this book to find out more about him. It's a great little book, with some plates of his other work.

It does not focus on Rupert, though, so if this is what you are after this may not be the book for you.

2.0 out of 5 stars not what you'd think, 28 Nov 2007
By A. D. Taylor "Laundry attendant, HMS Thunderc... (Nutwood council estate) - See all my reviews

I found this book to be bittersweet, Alfred Bestal is certainly and excellent artist (I own some of his prints)however i found his journals of visiting the middle east ect extreamly dull, a very very nice man comes across but his actual life reads rather uninteresting, there are many parts which leave the reader guessing such as how he felt about being first on the scene at a bombsite with casualties, and what he actually wrote to the Daily Express when the '73 annuanl was given a white face, also what happened to his sister, and why only one paragraph about the only woman in his life?
The main details giving Mr Bestal real depth are completely missing, which is a great shame
