‘A godsend to prospective parents looking for alternatives to Janet and John’

Product Description

A baby's name is almost certainly a name for life. So should you settle for James or Sarah? Or could you search for something more original and if so, what? And having chosen your baby's name, could you begin to explain its meaning?Best Baby Names is the essential A-Z guide for deciding your child's name. It contains over 1,500 possible choices, from Aaron to Zuleika, through the old-fashioned (Hazel and Gilbert), the modern (Jade and Devon), the unusual (Anselm and Tanith) and the most popular (Chloe and Jack). Best Baby Names reveals who has influenced the popularity of names, including film stars (Mia), biblical figures (Isaac) and fictional characters (Harry), and suggests why Chelsea, April, Rose and Ebony might be appropriate for your child. Names with shared roots are gathered together in the same entry: you might decide against Helen in favour of Ellen, Elaine or Illona, or even need to switch at the last minute from Sean to Shauna.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a good main source - ok as a companion to other books, 19 Jan 2003

(REAL NAME)
Neither my husband nor myself has found this book very helpful as a main source for baby names.

The book does not contain any pronunciations, making many of the entries (especially Gaelic or Celtic ones) useless. Also it does not tell you what a lot of the names mean. Most of the information here would be more useful to a linguistics researcher than a prospective parent. Also it is all alphabetical and it is not divided into helpful sections (not even 'male' and 'female') like a lot of other books on the market.

We failed to find a single name we really liked in it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really useful little book, 20 Jul 2009
By 4Smithy (Scotland) - See all my reviews
I used this book to help in naming all four of my children and found it simple, straightforward and very easy to use. It is laid out in alphabetical order and gives both definition and background information about each name, its root and any related names or alternative spellings. Nicely written without any silly gimmics. Highly recommended.
