5.0 out of 5 stars Shooting butterflies, 22 Feb 2004
This review is from: Shooting Butterflies (Paperback)
Cobbold is an extraordinary writer. There were moments in this book when I felt as if she knew my thoughts. She's not only exceptionally perceptive about women, she understands men, and loves them with all their imperfections. Sharp intelligence, wit, compassion and a marvellous storyteller; a real treat. I can't wait for her next book

5.0 out of 5 stars A terrific new novel from a writer well worth waiting for., 16 Feb 2003
By E. M. Buchan (London United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Marika Cobbold's brilliantly witty and blackly comic writing manages both to point fun at the absurdities of life and, at the same time, to celebrate them. Shooting Butterflies is sad and clever, funny and fresh.

2.0 out of 5 stars What a great title!, 16 May 2007
This review is from: Shooting Butterflies (Paperback)
What a great title! Regrettably, the novel disappoints. Our book club felt the author produced a confused structure around the admirable character portrayals of Grace and Louisa. More stringent editing would have avoided the introduction of a host of characters who lacked any purpose, eliminated the section on childhood disfigurement which lacked any influence, and curtailed the constant repetition of character names in dialogue which lacked any substance. The concept of the entwined relationships was well conceived but, sadly, missed the mark.
