Product Description

David O'Toole, The Times 16th June 2001
'makes compelling reading.'

Product Description
How do you rebel when your parents are the E-generation? Youth will always find a way...With parents who are hash-heads, still on an E-spree ten years after they should've calmed down, Bay and his buddies feel obliged to be squeaky-clean teens. Between the gym and the juicebar they do a pretty good job, even after someone's science-geek kid brother synthesises Crystal Meth in his bedroom: the sex is just to make the drugs work, right? sure it is. But soon everyone's doing it, and it's only a matter of time till the local drug baron resents the competition. Trouble is, he might live closer to home than Bay thinks.

5.0 out of 5 stars SO SLICK IT SHINES, 9 Aug 2000
By psmethwick@hotmail.com (Sheffield, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Coast (Paperback)
Coast is by far the best book I have read in a long while. Yeah, it is hip, but a convincing set of characters, and more plot twists than you can shake a stick at, allow it to be so. If Branton wasn't so cool, Bay and his rabble of gorgeous young things could not be so convincing in their roles of neo rebellion against a society screwed by MDMA. As it stands, I believed him all the way. I'm sure I have met those people. In fact, I probably fancied myself as those people when I was but a whippersnapper. That's the thing about Coast. It is a world we recognise, and a great story along the way. Round of applause, sir.

3.0 out of 5 stars Drugs & adolescant angst by affluent narrator, 14 Jul 2000

Narrative style was good and some of the phraseology was very cool but I couldn't help but wonder about Branton's age. Sometimes I felt He was bludgeoning me with how hip he was. Strip away the hipness and you find quite a mundane tale of parental neglect.

5.0 out of 5 stars a british catcher in the rye, 12 Aug 2002
ok, so it isn't really that good. but it is a rare book that comes closer than any i've read to telling it like it is for teens who do drugs [and who doesn't?] and f**k their brains out while still really wanting mommy and daddy [who are-- the sad fact comes out: areseholes just like everybody else] to wipe their noses and cuddle them.

the protagonist feels betrayed by his slimey and duplicitous parents, and by his 'girlfriend'. it is a hard lesson to learn that these people don't act according to YOUR direction or the way they do in harry potter and other fairly tales.

the crystal meth scenes are way cool, even if eventually the kids involved do realize, as we all sadly do, that this kind of lifestyle cannot be sustained.

hey, it was great while it lasted.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad
This book is unoriginal, boring and tries far too hard. Aiming to be like the Beach, it fails to capture any emotion or imagination. It's just void of any literary quality!

5.0 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down! A mirror image of my own life!
Branton's story of how youth always rebels makes this book quite possibly the best book I've ever read. Read more

AVOID THIS BOOK: IT IS AWFUL. The author panders to cosumerist sensibilities and reels out an irritating stream of brand names in inanely superficial attempt to cover up the... Read more
