The first thing that grabbed my four year old (and my seven year old) were the wonderful illustrations by Sophie Windham. Before we even sat down to read the story together they were enthralled. Each page of illustrations seems to tell its own story. And they loved the story too. Especially little Eric, a boy who tells 'tall stories', something my daughter can perhaps relate to. I definitely recommend this book to parents of small children who are looking for something absorbing and lively and are determined to get their little ones addicted to books.

I measure the success of childrens books in my household by two factors: firstly whether the kids keep asking for it, and secondly whether I keep suggesting it to them. This book manages both!

I find it very nice to read aloud, as it is written in good grammatical english and has a nice way of expressing things. The pictures I find a bit less satisfying, as they seem slightly over-drawn and fussily detailed, but my 4 year old loves them. It makes a great bedtime book, as it flows along nicely and has a soothing rhythm to it.

My husband has read this book so often he can recite it aloud, very useful on car journeys!

Every now and again you stumble across a book that stands out from the crowd and you have to have your own copy - this is one of those. It's a humorous interesting story with strong artwork. In a nutshell, an elephant appears in a town where nobody knows what it is with the exception of a little boy, Eric, who tried to tell them, but nobody listens to him. The town elders try to work out what it could be - a train, a fire engine, a vacuum cleaner - but can't get the elephant to work as any of these things? My children (3,5,6) think this is very funny indeed. Finally the professor, after considerable research, comes up with the answer that Eric has been trying to give them for the last dozen pages - it's an elephant. And then on the last page there's a delightful twist, and what is the elephant called? Makes me smile every time.
