Product Description

Set in a small village in the French Alps, "Pig Earth" relates the stories of sceptical, hard-working men and fiercely independent women. This book is an act of reckoning that conveys the precise wealth and weight of a world we are losing.

4.0 out of 5 stars a painting in words writing so close to the bone of things.., 2 Nov 2001
By A Customer
'Pig Earth' is the first book in John Berger's trilogy, 'Into their Labours', which depicts the demise of peasant culture during the 20th century. Berger writes with an immense depth, beauty and integrity. He focuses on a French alpine village and manages to write in such a way as to evoke the harshness and beauty of that life. It disturbs and touches in a particularly raw way. I liked the form of the book very much; it's as if he is coming from different angles, sketching from here, and now from there, and searching into the dark, forgotten corners of the village. And once he enters those corners he tells extraordinary stories, bringing the people, the animals, the landscape involved alive in their fullness with such economy. I find myself returning to particular sections of the book as one might to a painting. It is a sad, disturbing, beautiful, real book and becomes more whole on reading the entire trilogy. Berger has an ability to write so close to the bone of things with such heart and beauty. He is, for me, a real master whose books i treasure. This book does what he does so well: shining a tender light into the shadows of life with not a hint of self-righteousness.
