5.0 out of 5 stars A captivating and quietly funny little book!, 27 Jul 2000
'The Double Bass' was my first ticket into the world of Patrick Susskind, and now that i'm in I dont want to leave! The double Bass is a short monologue (performed recently at the Endinburgh Festival)about the instrument, how it plays, how it is viewed by others and how it affects its player. It is amazing how Susskind makes this seemingly dull instrument come life! Each and everyline reaveals a new aspect to the double bass, making it just as important a character as its player! A short and endearing little book, perfect to keep in your pocket and open anywhere at anytime to be captivated!

5.0 out of 5 stars An engaging read, entirely captivating, 28 Jun 2001
By A Customer
Suskind's play is easier to read than it is to perform. There is not an overall arc to the narrative, so much as there are alternating patterns of digression and whimsy. This makes for a rather erratic stage performance, as the actor is forced to present a somewhat schizoid mindset. It is nevertheless wildly amusing, and should not be discounted. At the centre of the narrative is an everyman-like figure, who wraps around himself a web of comforting lies and digressions which hint at the tortured figure underneath.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most wonderful book, ever!, 30 Oct 2001
Not only is the story absolutely brilliant, but the size of this book means you can carry it with you wherever you go. Suskind has captured the attitude of a double bass player down to the last detail. This book is heart-warming, funny and enlightening... a must-have for everyone, especially bass players.
