Product Description

Product Description

Brian Wilson was the creative genius behind The Beach Boys. He turned a suburban California garage into a group that took the world by storm, with the sound of his songs, the sound capturing the laid-back, sunny Southern California lifestyle. But the cheerful image belied what was really going on. This autobiography describes Wilson's 20-year nightmare of drug addiction, alcoholism, obesity and mental illness. He spent three years alone in his room. He lost his family, and he nearly lost his life. It is a frank discussion of what destroyed his life and of the controversial forces which helped to save it.

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic, 30 Jul 2003
By A Customer
this has got to be the most fantastic book iv ever read in my entire life.brian wilson is complelty honest about every detail of his life, for the abuse he suffered from his father to the conflicts with the other beachboys members.
this is an amazing story of courage and in insight into the mind of a genius touched by mental illness.

3.0 out of 5 stars I have doubts about its validity......., 2 Sep 2006
By M. M. Connors (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is indeed un-put-downable, and a riveting read from start to finish. It is an incredible story and i am sure the bare facts are true. Brian Wilson is an eccentric genius who battled with a lot of demons and was (probably still is) surrounded by untrustworthy people, including his closest confidant, Dr. Landy. It turns out Dr. Landy (psychiatrist / manager / svengali) was a huge influence in the writing of this book and at the time of writing, Brian Wilson was placed on heavy psychtropic drugs which meant he was pretty zoned out in the years this book was written. So it begs the question, how much of this book is a true reflection of Brian Wilson?

Since finishing this book (2 hours ago) i did some research on the net and found that shortly after the book's completion, Dr. Landy was indeed sued for his 'influence' shall we say and Brian Wilson has since publicly spoken out about his time with Dr. Landy and the 'brain-washing' he was subjected to! In fact on the official Brian Wilson website it publicly denounces Dr. Landy!

Which therefore means that the validity of this book is questionable and i do not know how much of it to believe anymore. I wish i had bought his most recent memoir instead and not invested a week reading this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars a gob-smacking rock and roll story., 21 Feb 2002
By A Customer
Possibly the most enthralling autobiography I've ever read, the negatives of Wilson's clearly selective memory are easily overshadowed by the sheer drama of this extraordinary story. Told warts and all, it tells two fascinating - and tragic - stories: the emergence of Wilson's genius and his subsequent descent into madness, and his ressurection by Dr Eugene Landy. It is un-put-downable - it cannot be recommended too much.
