Synopsis

This study of the cult literary figure, Jack Kerouac gives an insight into the writer's frustrations and the critical hostility his work received.;"On the Road" epitomized the freewheeling, rebellious nature of the Woodstock generation and Kerouac was heralded as the daddy of the "Beats". Yet, at the time of his death he was drunk, broke and living with his mother.;Despite the novel's cult status, Kerouac suffered from a growing weariness with the publishers' rejections, and felt frustrated by the critical hostility which greeted its eventual publication. His optimism for the freedom of a bohemian lifestyle was gradually displaced. Finally it evaporated in the realization of the Buddhist truth that all life is suffering.;Interest in his work and life continues. The USD91 dollars he left to his mother at his death has metamorphised into an estate worth USD10 million which has provoked a fierce custody debate. The fight, between his only daughter and his wife's relatives, includes the rights to some unpublished material, which Kerouac scholars have deemed priceless.;This biography offers an account of a man whose iconic status remains undiminished.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent pictorial biography, 13 Sep 2002
This is a book to buy for the pictures and for a good brief whistle-stop tour of Jack Kerouac's life. For more details you need to read Nicosia's 'Memory Babe' or Ann Charters' 'Jack Kerouac' but if the details overwhelm you, Turner's is an excellent book for sorting out the bare bones of Kerouac's life in your mind.

The pictures were fantastic and included many of Kerouac and his contemporaries I hadn't seen before. The book also included general photos of the era, the people of the time, and the places Kerouac frequented or visited. This was a slightly unusual wider approach which I liked, and I felt it enabled me to see Kerouac's life in its wider context. I liked the design of the book too - kind of scrapbook-like with old-fashioned typewriter font face. A book to admire, cherish and return to.
