3.0 out of 5 stars A tale from the sixties, 25 Feb 2003
By Dori (San Francisco) - See all my reviews
This is a slight, sparsely written novel about a young woman living in London in the swinging sixties. Joy's life is hard, she's not too bright, not terribly moral, and yet we come to care about her and wish her well. Perhaps it's her longing for a better life and the real love she has for her child that are her redeeming qualities. This novel is as much a portrait of a time and place as much as a character study. We finish the story knowing life in sixties London as much as we know Joy.

5.0 out of 5 stars a bleak honest yet funny novel, 17 May 2000
By A Customer
An excellent Read...Joy has a hard life yet makes the best of it.. we hear her in her own words and through narrative in a blisteringly honest portrayal of a life unable to afford the luxury of choice...The day after I finished this book I went out and got the sequel from the Library
